The plan and associated Strategic Environmental Assessment is available from their website – www.clydeforum.org/ssmei - as well as details of forthcoming consultation events around the project area. 26/06/09 The Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network (SSACN) are billing this weekend's Sharkatag "the greatest shark tagging event ever held in Scotland, the UK and probably in the world". 215 anglers from as far away as Cornwall and Caithness, attended the event held around the Solway region in South West Scotland, to catch, tag and release various shark species. 13/06/09 - 14/06/09 MSPs from the "Rural Affairs and Environment Committee" visited Oban to critique the Marine Bill that has recently been put before parliament. Today's meeting was a fact finding mission to talk to people about their thoughts / issues on the marine bill and their experiences to date with marine planning and management. 01/06/09 Wild Scotland ran a course entitled "A Tourist Guide's View to Scottish Wildflowers and Other Plants" this weekend at Kindrogan Field Centre near Pitlochry. Aimed at people who would like to refresh or add to their existing knowledge of Scottish wildflowers, participants were introduced to a range of the key plant species and habitats in Scotland and learned about the fundamental tools for identifications. This is a new marine management body which is set to play a vital role in managing Scotland's seas. The work has been contracted to SAMS at Dunstaffnage, Oban and they are keen to receive any feedback the wider working group / liaison network or national steering group may have on this report. It can now be found at www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/ssmeisoundofmull. 09/12/08 SSACN (The Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network) has been invited by the Scottish Marine Directorate to join other representative organisations to help formulate their response to EU commission proposals which will directly affect the way RSA (Recreational Sea Angling) is regulated in this country. Comments to John Eddie Donnelly by 18 August please. Recreation and Tourism is one of six sectors which will be covered by the Firth of Clyde Marine Spatial Plan (FoCMSP). The consultation period for Scotland's first marine bill is now underway and will run until 6 October 2008. It won't take long and will likely be of benefit to ACBA in the future. 29/04/08 An issue that arose at the AGM was that of an access ladder which has literally fallen off the North Pier. ACBA will remind Argyll & Bute Council that they are responsible for safety on the North Pier being the Harbour Authority for the pier. It describes lessons learned by the pilots so far though the majority of information comes from the Clyde and Shetland officers as they are further ahead than the Sound of Mull. The designated anchorages were identified following a review by the Argyll Marine SAC Management Forum and can be used routinely without damage to the fragile serpulid reefs inhabiting the loch. Responses must be in by 30 May 2008. 05/03/08 The Shetland Islands SSMEI Marine Spatial Plan Consultation starts today and runs until 16 May 2008. The Plan has been prompted by the Scottish Government to test a new framework for the sustainable management of the marine and coastal environment and is one of four schemes in Scotland (alongside the Sound of Mull, the Firth of Clyde and Berwickshire). It incorporates an earlier paper "Oban Bay - Problems and Solutions". This response follows the public meeting of 18 January organised by Oban Bay Marine. 23/01/08 Download (880kb .pdf) a leaflet outlining the Diving Code of Conduct for recreational divers in the Firth of Lorn and Loch Creran Marine Areas of Special Conservation. It has been produced by the Coastal Development Unit of Argyll & Bute Council and is endorsed by various diving organisations. 21/01/08 Download (335kb .pdf) a copy of the BSAC's 2007 Annual Incident Report. It contains (anonymous) details of all the UK sport diving incidents (including "tekkie" diving) about which the BSAC has been able to obtain information. Some of it makes some sombre reading but the object of publishing all this information is to enable us all to learn from other divers' experiences and hence dive as safely as possible. 19/01/08 Outcome of the well attended community consultation meeting organised by Oban Bay Marine and chaired by Jim Mather MSP which took place on Friday 18 January 2008 in the Argyllshire Gathering Halls, Oban. Tony Hill attended on behalf of ACBA and reported a positive approach which is being business-led. Read about the meeting on the Oban Bay Marine website or download points noted by the Chair (63kb .pdf). 18/01/08 Download (3.55Mb .pdf) the "Finding NIMAs" report featured on the Scottish Environment LINK website. The report identifies "Nationally Important Marine Areas" which could be protected under a proposed Scottish Marine Bill in addition to the currently designated marine Special Areas of Conservation. If this report is acted upon the authors stress the selection of sites would need to go through a "scientifically robust process". Sites vary from the Sound of Mull to St Kilda so no doubt contains areas within which you work.
