Please take a moment to read the attached document "Why Oban Bay Marine" (pdf file - 382 kb) which outlines a proposal aiming to improve facilities for small vessels in the Oban area.

A community based company, Oban Bay Marine, has been established to develop improved facilities for small vessels in the Oban area. This initiative, encouraged by Argyll and Bute Council, is seeking funding from a range of organisations to install pontoon access in the Dungallan Park area of the town, where it's hoped that fuel and water will be available and also access for disabled people.

The scale of development is likely to be modest initially, but the Board has ambitions for larger scale developments over time. Funding will be a critical factor in the success of this initiative, but it is thought that a community based company, with profits being reinvested in the development, will be an attractive option for a range of potential funding bodies.

Owners of leisure, charter and fishing vessels and local and national organisations are welcoming this venture. Local canoeists, seeking improved facilities, tell us that Oban and the surrounding waters are regarded as a top rank kayaking area on a world scale, on a par with the Arctic, Greenland and Chilean Tierra del Fuego.

A recent Scottish Enterprise report has indicated that the marine leisure industry contributes £250 million annually to the Scottish economy. If Oban Bay Marine is a success, it could attract a significant share of that sum to Oban and help boost the local economy.
