Yachting Life June 2008

+ Fishermen in Oban are objecting to plans for the Oban Bay pontoon development. The fear is that jobs may be lost as some businesses may move away because of the development. There is concern that with bigger fishing boats there will not be room for everyone, particularly following the loss of 12 berths with the construction of the second linkspan. A meeting last month between representatives of the community company and fishermen failed to find common ground although fishermen's representative John McAlister said they agreed with the development in principle. However the fishermen say they will object to the current plans as they stand.

+ Oban now has 16 dedicated visitor moorings laid on trots between Oban Sailing Club and the former BorroBoats pontoon. North West Marine moved the visitor moorings from the Esplanade to the new location just to the north of Cardingmill Bay last month. Secretary of Cardingmill Bay Mooring Owners Association Adrian Lauder said the association was extremely grateful for the help given by Tony Ratcliffe and his NW Marine team. "Tony has helped the organisation so much to provide more facilities for visiting yachtsmen and this latest development would just not have been possible without his help," he told YL. Yachts will still be able to anchor off Oban's esplanade in calm weather inside the existing private moorings. Plans for a small landing pontoon at Dungallan are being put on hold at present while grant funding opportunities are being further investigated.

+ Well known west coast sailors Douglas and Mary Lindsay who retired from sailing yacht Corryvreckan last year are back on the water again, but this time there are no white sails in evidence! There's more, which can be read in the latest edition of YL, but we just thought we would give our ex-Chairman a mention here!
